Laser Exfoliation 101 – What it Is & How it Rejuvenates Skin

These days, it’s hard to remember a time before lasers, even though the term and the tech are relatively new. The word “laser” started off in 1957 as an acronym (L.A.S.E.R.) standing for “light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.” A year later in 1958, the first laser system was constructed in a laboratory. Fast forward to the 21st century and you’ll find lasers just about everywhere—even at your favorite medspa in Boston, MA.

At Regeneris Medspa & Cosmetic Surgery, we’re no strangers to lasers. Dr. Ryan Welter and his team have been using various laser systems to melt fat, repair acne scars, and rejuvenate skin from the deepest layers up. Here’s how laser rejuvenation could improve your look and your confidence at Regeneris today.

Cosmetic Laser Services at Regeneris Medspa

At Regeneris, one of our favorite lasers for skin rejuvenation is our LaseMD fractional laser exfoliation system. But we know it’s not always enough to put “laser” and “better skin” together as though we were adding 2 and 2. Here’s how our LaseMD treatment works, what it does, and what you can expect during your next appointment.

What is Laser Exfoliation Used For?

Laser skin rejuvenation systems provide numerous benefits in each and every sitting. By simply penetrating the skin’s layers (epidermis, dermis, hypodermis), LaseMD can be used by patients of all sorts to achieve any number of results, including:

  • Reducing fine lines/wrinkles
  • Scar revision
  • Faster skin healing
  • Skin tightening
  • Improving skin texture
  • Hyperpigmentation treatment
  • Melasma treatment
  • Collagen induction

How Does Laser Exfoliation Work?

Laser exfoliation (also called laser skin resurfacing) relies on your skin’s natural ability to interact with certain wavelengths of light. Human skin has been designed by nature to draw information from periods of light and dark. Sleep cycles, vitamin production, bone development, and other vital functions and systems depend on light from the sun itself.

Unlike scalpels or needles, laser beams can pass harmlessly through skin, muscle, and tissue, inspiring cellular repair without damage or discomfort. This is how LaseMD works.

What Does Laser Exfoliation Do?

As you might remember from middle-school science class, light is energy and energy is heat. The LaseMD system uses fractional laser energy to create microchannels in the skin (imagine extremely microscopic tunnels leading to lower skin layers).

Once microchannels have been created, heat from the laser follows them down to lower skin layers. Here, heat inspires your skin to supercharge its own natural production of collagen and elastin—two structural proteins responsible for overall skin health, texture, tone, healing, and quality.

Are Laser Exfoliation Treatments & Microneedling Related?

Laser exfoliation works in much the same way as microneedling & RF microneedling treatments. The main difference, of course, is that fractional lasers do the work of needles.

For many patients, laser exfoliation is preferred when dealing with skin in hard-to-treat areas. Microneedling can’t be used everywhere on the body. A certain depth of skin and soft tissue are required for microneedling to provide the best benefits.

Fractional laser systems, meanwhile, can go where microneedling can’t to deliver similar results. This makes the LaseMD treatment ideal for treating the decolletage, neck, and other sensitive areas.

Are You Ready for 21st-Century Skin Rejuvenation?

The 21st century is, without a doubt, the age of the cosmetic laser. Safer, more powerful, and more precise cosmetic laser systems are being developed each and every day to provide stronger results across wider treatment areas with little to no downtime or discomfort.

At Regeneris Medspa & Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Ryan Welter and his team can recommend a LaseMD or other laser treatment to address your concerns. During your consultation, we’ll speak with you at length about your expectations and desires to recommend only the most suitable treatment.
